The most frequently encountered specie is the apple Guava. They are native to Mexico, Central America, and northern S. America. They have since been transported and naturalized throughout the tropics and sub tropics in South East Asia, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Florida and Africa.
Guava has quite a few names in India. In North India it is called “Amrood”, in Maharashtra the name is “peru”, in Bengal it is “pearah” and in Gujarat it is “jaamfal”. The fruit is not only relished by humans but by many mammals and birds. The animals will eat the fruit and disperse the seeds in their droppings. Guava wood is also used for smoking meat in Hawaii.

Health benefits of Guava fruit.

The guava fruit is a great herbal medicine. It is usually 4 to 12cms. Long and round or oval depending on the species.

Guava has strong anti oxidant properties. Both the red and the white fleshed guavas scored in the top ten fruits and vegetables tested, but the red fleshed guava has the higher anti oxidant value.

In America and other parts of the world we get majority of the lycopene from tomatoes. Lycopene provides protection against free radicals more than any other member of the entire carotenoid family.

Lycopene in Guava is a valuable content that helps fight prostrate and breast cancer.

Guava is also rich in potassium, high in fiber and Vitamin C.
