  Cabbage leaves often have a delicate powdery waxy coating called bloom. The occasional sharp or bitter taste of cabbage is due to glucosinolate. Cabbage is also a good source of riboflavin.


Cabbage also keeps breast cancer away. Researcher Laurie Deutsch Mozian observed that women living in Eastern European countries surrounding Poland and Russia were much less likely to develop cancer as compared to American women. An analysis of their diet revealed a much higher intake of cabbage. Years of research has shown that the pytochemicals in the cabbage alter estrogen metabolism in a favorable way, one that is likely to reduce the risk of cancer.



Red or purple cabbage is also a source of antbocyanins. These are pigment molecules which make blueberries blue and red cabbage red. They are found in many colorful fruits and belong to a group of plant compounds called flavonids. They have considerable bio active properties including acting as powerful anti- oxidants.

Cabbage is also a good source of vitamins and minerals. It contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, beta-carotene; One cup of cooked cabbage also gives you 4 grams of fiber.

. I recovered from an aorta rupture. A twelve hour operation to repair the aorta and place artificial aorta valves as the natural valves had burst under pressure.

I started the slow road to recovery, eat prudently. It was vital that I loose weight, increase my energy level and try and build some muscle. Easier said then done! The Doctor’s advice to me- eat intelligently. I am fifty eight, at my age it ant easy to loose weight.
The first challenge is to regulate eating, breakfast on time, eat nothing between meals. Eating dinner latest by 6.30 PM and not eating thereafter till breakfast the next morning. My dinner is invariably a fillet of whitefish, steamed vegetables and some mashed potatoes.
White fish is high in protein and low in calories. A fillet of 3 oz. fish will deliver 20 grams of protein and is just one hundred calories. This is half of the total protein one needs per day.

Lean fish have a mild flavor, making them adaptable to all cuisines. The white fish easily available in our market are Atlantic cod, flounder, halibut, Orange roughy, and Pollack. Orange roughy is imported from New Zealand. This is a good source of vitamins, minerals and protein. White fish has many health benefits.

The most frequently encountered specie is the apple Guava. They are native to Mexico, Central America, and northern S. America. They have since been transported and naturalized throughout the tropics and sub tropics in South East Asia, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Florida and Africa.
Guava has quite a few names in India. In North India it is called “Amrood”, in Maharashtra the name is “peru”, in Bengal it is “pearah” and in Gujarat it is “jaamfal”. The fruit is not only relished by humans but by many mammals and birds. The animals will eat the fruit and disperse the seeds in their droppings. Guava wood is also used for smoking meat in Hawaii.
